The other day a six-year-old boy jumped on me asking ‘what is digital marketing’. I was like Whoa! How do you know about it?

He said he heard me talking to someone about it. I think you may be saying what a smart boy he is. Asking big questions being so tiny.

But I didn’t think that way at that time. I was thinking whether he listened to the whole conversation. Hopefully not.

Well, I started asking him questions..

“Hey 6-year-old spy, Where do you spend your time after school and stuff?”

“On the phone.”

“If you see someone eating ice cream or even mention the word ice cream, what will you do?

“I will ask mom if we can get ice cream that day.”

“Exactly, by the way you wanted ice cream even before seeing it. But after seeing it, you thought you need it now.”

“..Yaa…So what does this have to do with digital marketing?”

“Through digital marketing, companies remind you to buy something, easily.”

Investopedia says, “Digital marketing is the use of the Internet, mobile devices, social media, search engines, and other channels to reach consumers.”

There are about 7 types of Digital Marketing So let’s look into the different types of digital marketing:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Get Google to know about you. So it can send that organic traffic. In simple words, make the best possible content for a particular topic. And do basic SEO.

Google will run all the way from California. And find you.

Strategies are important. But content and user-experience are really important. You slap this with SEO strategies, you will surely rank in Google Searches.

REMEMBER Google’s mission is to provide the best content to its searchers. Help Google in its mission and you will ace the SEO test.

SEM (Search Engine Marketing)

Your first goal is organic traffic for your business. But you don’t just want to do SEO. You wanna go one step ahead.

You go for paid advertisements. So your website will get traffic.

There are two things here: PPC and CPC.

PPC — Pay Per Click — Used to describe that you are running this kind of advertisement.

CPC — Cost Per Click- Exactly what you pay while running this kind of advertisement.

For example:

You say, “I want to run a PPC ad campaign in Google and want to average my CPC at $0.50 ”

Another thing here is ‘Local SEO’ which means listing your business in Google. After verifying you appear for searches like “coffee shops near me”.

Email Marketing

You know this. Getting your email subscribers list to take action by sending them an effective Call-To-Action in your email sequence.

You also know that average expected ROI is $42 for every $1 you invest in email marketing.

No other platform can beat the sugar daddy of platforms- the Email.

Are you really building your email community? We kinda ignore it a little bit. But an active, efficient community means they are ready to buy your first product or service.

Finally, it’s the most effective way to capture your high-quality lead’s attention. And send personalized messages to your target audience.

Affiliate Marketing

There are 2 openings here.

You can either be a merchant or an affiliate marketer.

If you are a merchant, you create a product, and then someone will send a lead to your website. And you give that someone a commission.

If you are an affiliate marketer, you need to send the lead to the merchant. And you will get a commission.

Research and get enough knowledge about a market. And then start giving useful value through blogs, videos, webinars, etc.

When people start trusting you as a go-to person, you can give affiliate links. And they will be happy.

Social Media Marketing

The ads which you see on Facebook, Instagram, etc. The copy and image are to attract potential customers to a very easy Call-To-Action.

The beginning of the sales funnel to attract as many visitors. And then slowly filter them through the funnels.

Many use social media for entertainment so one must understand the audience’s need while doing the SMM.

And each platform has its pros and cons. You’ll need to choose a few specific platforms to truly understand the market. No one becomes a master of many.

Content Marketing

According to Backlinko, the different types of content marketing are:

Blogging, Video, Podcasting, Info-graphics, Visual Content, Email, E books, Lead Magnets, White Papers, Slide-share Presentations, Quizzes/Tools, Checklists, Courses, Webinars, Slide decks, Free Apps, Social Media Post, etc.

Whoa!

So many ways to engage your audience. Providing value more than others will win you in people’s hearts. You look at people who became very famous in a particular industry.

You will notice they share a lot more than you can think. Like Tony Robbins, Gary Vee, Neil Patel, Brian etc.

But Content Marketing is not like content writing where you write an article regarding any subject. On the other hand, content marketing is to lead people to trust you as an authority.

And eventually when they need a particular product from an industry, they will know where to go.

Mobile Marketing

A company can reach you via your smartphone through text messages, emails, app install ads.

There are still huge markets of people who can receive a text message and learn about a product or service.

As the open rate of SMS is 98% compared to 22% for email.

Another way is through pull notification and push notifications from apps.

Pull notification: where a client requests a server to check if there are any updates.
For example, software like Skype requests the server to keep it updated.

Push notification: where a server notifies the client about its updates.
For example, we do this when we click “allow” on various app notifications. We get reminders, promotional content, etc.

So this is a broad overview of different types of Digital Marketing. Digital Marketing is easy, scale-able, analytical, cheap, time efficient, robust, target-able,etc.

Hence many companies use Digital Marketing for their product or services. Even if we are not a digital marketer. Having a brief knowledge is crucial in this time. As knowledge is power.
